Senior Engineering Manager, Intercom

Talk Title
The path towards (a more) tech-agnostic hiring process

Talk Abstract

Traditionally, companies have hired software engineers based on how deeply they dominate a specific set of technical skills. By chasing this formula exclusively, it’s easy to miss out on candidates with a high-value, broad set of skills capable of delivering more well-rounded solutions and often higher quality outcomes.

In this talk, I’ll share an approach to identify which core skills are required for an engineer to thrive in your organisation, as opposed to the knowledge they can gain during onboarding. This will help you build teams with complementary strengths and a solid base made up of strong communicators, problem solvers and owners.

Martha is a Senior Engineering Manager at Intercom, where she leads a cross-functional team developing market-leading automation to improve the end-to-end customer support experience for more than 25,000 businesses and billions of end users.

She has been working in the tech industry for over 20 years, both as a software engineer and as a manager in companies like WorldFirst and Paddle. She strongly believes in encouraging autonomy and ownership within teams, while driving clarity on overall direction and creating a continuous feedback culture for recognition and growth.
